You and Your Computer – Personal/Home Office/Small Business

What is your level of protection, assurance, have you or do you know of someone who received a virus, loss data, experienced a catastrophic hard drive failure or has had a bad experience with a computer service person or center?  If your computer is impervious or nondestructive, read no further.

Data & System Security Protection - Anyone who has/uses a computer should be aware of how to protect their data/files not only from data loss due to catastrophic hard drive failure, but data theft by computer hackers and viruses that plague the Internet, Computers & Networks.

If your computer & operating system are not current with updates, programs installed and most important…virus definitions, you are vulnerable to viruses, back door attacks from Trojan viruses and data theft.

A virus, depending on its design may delete system files, affect only one particular program, cause havoc/ill regularities within your system, become a parasite and attach to files or e-mails being sent.  Much like a biological virus, a computer virus must piggyback on top of some other program or document in order to get executed. Once it is running, it is then able to infect other programs or documents.  This infection my come from a floppy disk as well.

Microsoft Operating Systems and their components/programs maybe vulnerable as well through an open port used to communicate with the Internet.  Much like if you open your front door to an intruder.  Without detection or protection in the form of what is called Firewalls, you are vulnerable.  Basically, a firewall is a barrier to keep destructive forces away from your property.  In fact, that's why it’s called a firewall.  Its job is similar to a physical firewall that keeps a fire from spreading from one area to the next.

Computer-FirstAid.com provides through its On-Site Preventive Maintenance Service, a check of the integrity of your System’s Security, updates to your current Operating System and Reports findings.  If you do not currently have in place Firewalls, an Anti-Virus Program or other form of Internet Security, CFAS (Computer FirstAid Services) will recommend and offer to install and setup such security for an additional fee.

Data Loss - If you have experienced data loss for any reason, accidental deletion, hard drive or disk failure, you know the feeling.  Although data loss cannot be prevented 100%, you can save hours of your time from loss of valuable files, digitized photographs whether from scanning or imported from digital cameras, scanned or created documents, multimedia creating/editing software etc.  Not to mention the time it takes to re-install the operating system, all updates, software previously installed, re-configuration, and hopefully you have all the disks to perform this.  What about programs/software downloaded, that was installed and you have no disks?

CFAS can provide a level of assurance and security to reduce the chance of Data Loss.  Through data backup using some version of operating system’s existing backup utilities, or by installing backup software and use of external storage device/hard drive or internal, a level of protection can be obtained…without it, what would be the cost to you or your business in the event of complete loss of all data?  You may never be back to 100%, making the decision to backup, having a backup system, making frequent backups; you could be back to 90-99% today or tomorrow.  There is a saying used in a TV commercial, “You can pay me now or later”.  The decision or choice, is what level of risk are you at now or the chance you are willing to take?

Data Recovery - Have you accidentally deleted a file or cannot access your hard drive, all might not be lost.  CFAS may be that source in recovering loss data.

Data Removal - About to give away or sell your computer?  Reformatting a hard drive does not wipe clean your hard drive making data unrecoverable.  Be assured CFAS can delete all confidential information and files that can never be recovered.  With Identity Theft on the rise...Do not let your personal data fall into the wrong hands.  Many computers being recycled end up in foreign countries.  Giving your computer away, will you be 100% guaranteed the person, charity, school, etc. will not recycle your old computer passing on your personal information or data that has not been made 100% unrecoverable?  E-Mail CFAS for Data Removal Service

Networking Wired or Wireless?

The advantages of networking are:

  • Access any file/your files from any computer on the network

  • Access/share one or more printers from any computer networked

  • Share a high-speed Internet connection (cable or DSL)

  • Back-up your files on multiple computers

  • Intranet – a private network within a home/office or small business similar to the Internet

Networking “Local Access Network (LAN)” for small Home Office or other small businesses allows one computer to connect to another or 3-10 other computers within the same room/office or additional room/offices.

Networking can be accomplished by Ethernet cards, cable, hub/router and configuration of the operating system used by each computer of the network.  The operating systems can be mixed versions i.e. Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, etc.

Another form of networking is Wireless “Wireless Local Access Network (WLAN)”.  Much like networking with cable, but without.  Wireless is not just for Laptops.   Cables require placement running within a wall(s), on the surface down a wall, overhead above the ceiling or around the baseboard level of a room/office.

Placement of the “Wireless Access Point Router” (WAPR) is important regarding range of the wireless signal.  Greater distance between Wireless networked Laptop/PC’s requires a Repeater/Signal Extender.  Which provides flexibility for Laptop users moving from room to room within the WAPR or Repeaters signal.
