The following are simple networks for home or office. Fig. 1 - 4 computers utilizing a network hub/router with internet connection sharing (ICS) with PC1. PC1 connects to DSL/Cable to the Internet. PC2 has shared printer. Fig. 2 - 2 computers connected to network hub/router connected to a residential gateway connected to a DSL/Cable Modem to the Internet. About Residential Gateways - The residential gateway is emerging as the ideal broadband access solution for the home and small office/home office (SOHO) subscriber. A residential gateway is the central access point for the subscriber's network. The residential gateway enables the subscriber to connect a variety of devices, including computers, servers, printers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and telephones into a single integrated access device. Fig. 4 - Same as Fig 3. with DSL/Cable Modem connected to Satellite/Microwave Dish - wireless service. Notes/Terminology
Bridge | Brouter | Ethernet | Firewall | Gateway | Hub | Internet | Intranet | IP | LAN | NIC | Nodes | Repeater | Router | Server | Switch | TCP/IP | USB | VPN | WAN | WAP | WEP | winipcfg | WINS | WinSock | Networking of 2 computers is referred to as P2P (peer-to-peer) There are Wired & Wireless Networks or a combination of both. Ethernet - called 100Base-T (or Fast Ethernet), supports data transfer rates of 100 Mbps. And the newest version, Gigabit Ethernet supports data rates of 1 gigabit (1,000 megabits) per second. NIC - Network Interface Card - an expansion board you insert into a computer so the computer can be connected to a network. Most NICs are designed for a particular type of network, protocol, and media, although some can serve multiple networks. Nodes - In networks, a processing location. A node can be a computer or some other device, such as a printer. Every node has a unique network address, sometimes called a Data Link Control (DLC) address or Media Access Control (MAC) address. LAN - Local Area Network - A computer network that spans a relatively small area. Most LANs are confined to a single building or group of buildings. However, one LAN can be connected to other LANs over any distance via telephone lines and radio waves. A system of LANs connected in this way is called a wide-area network (WAN). WAN - Wide Area Network - A computer network that spans a relatively large geographical area. Typically, a WAN consists of two or more local-area networks (LANs). Computers connected to a wide-area network are often connected through public networks, such as the telephone system. They can also be connected through leased lines or satellites. The largest WAN in existence is the Internet. Internet - A global network connecting millions of computers. More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges of data. Unlike online services, which are centrally controlled, the Internet is decentralized by design. Each Internet computer, called a host, is independent. Its operators can choose which Internet services to use and which local services to make available to the global Internet community. Remarkably, this anarchy by design works exceedingly well. There are a variety of ways to access the Internet. Most online services, such as America Online, CompuServe, Earthlink, Prodigy, offer access to some Internet services. It is also possible to gain access through a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP). The Internet is NOT synonymous with World Wide Web. Intranet - A network based on TCP/IP protocols (an internet) belonging to an organization, usually a corporation, accessible only by the organization's members, employees, or others with authorization. An intranet's Web sites look and act just like any other Web sites, but the firewall surrounding an intranet fends off unauthorized access. Like the Internet itself, intranets are used to share information. Secure intranets are now the fastest-growing segment of the Internet because they are much less expensive to build and manage than private networks based on proprietary protocols. VPN - Virtual Private Network - WEP - Wired Equivalent Privacy - |
